Fit By 40 – May Update

Fit by 40 May

It's been two and a half months since I began my healthy living and I am so pleased with my progress so far. I was in Florida at the end of April/beginning of May, so I did take a few weeks' break from my no gluten, no sugar and no dairy lifestyle. But how can you go to the USA and not eat pancakes, fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits? Hmmm, buttermilk biscuits. Anyway, before I start daydreaming about unhealthy American food, let's get back to healthy eating.

In the March update I revealed that I had lost seven pounds in the first 2 1/2 weeks. I lost another seven pounds for the April update, making it a total of one stone (14 pounds). This month has seen less of a weight loss. This has not come as a shock as I took time off from the diet to gorge on ribs, washed down by copious amounts of margaritas. I am actually surprised that I did not put on any weight in Florida. My weigh-in revealed a weight loss of four pounds, which I am happy about. I am now at a total of 18 pounds which is almost half of my goal of 42 pounds (3 stone).

Since last month's update focused on healthy eating, I thought this month's update would focus on exercise. While I firmly believe that what you eat is the most important part of losing weight, I think that exercise is a firm second. I have found a local yoga class. Though I have only attended a few times, I have enjoyed the hour of stretching and toning.

In March, I joined my local gym. I have previously tried doing exercise DVDs at home, but too often I would put it off. And since Dubz now attends pre-school three mornings a week, I couldn't make the excuse that I did not have the time. And when I have had particularly busy weeks, I have been heading to the gym in the evenings and on the weekend. I began just using the stationary bike, followed by a few stretches and abdominal curls. After so many years of not exercising, I did not want to do too much and injure myself.

I now alternate between the treadmill and the elliptical trainer. I then do abdominal exercises before either using free weights on my arms or the machine leg weights. Even though I only workout for an hour twice a week, I feel like my body is more toned. I would obviously prefer to go to the gym three or four times a week, but I am busy and I cannot always prioritise exercise over blogging and chores.

It is now almost exactly three months until my 40th birthday. Hopefully I can lose these next 24 pounds and become fit in time for 40.

Well done lovely! A great achievement to continue loosing whilst in the US. I've been trying hard to get some more exercise in too but you're right, it's not easy to find time. Good luck for the next month. #weightlosswednesday

  2. Brilliant result, Elfa! I laughed a lot at the gorging on ribs washed down by Margaritas! I am trying to be healthy at the moment too. On Friday I did a great workout. Then went home, drank a bottle of prosecco and a plate of cheese. Yeah baby! Although I totes agree that cutting out the cheese boards etc is the biggest factor, I think exercise is brilliant for loads of other important reasons - like getting you away from the fridge for an hour, and giving you that endorphin high, making you feel generally better about yourself. You go girl! You so don't look like you're 39 3/4 - no way lady! Lots of love xxx

Aww, thanks. Though I think many people don't look their age anymore. Must be all the margaritas and prosecco. I have really been enjoying the exercise. You're right, it is so good mentally to get out and work out. But it's good ot be balanced. I couldn't live a life of total deprivation. Would make me sad. xx

  6. Lucky you, so Florida? Have never been but can imagine it's not easy to have all the food you were used to and probably miss here in the UK! Let me tell you a secret. Most of the times I am good with food and my exercises, but when it comes to holidays, I love to indulge. I love seafood, so always eat loads. have never had a sweet tooth, but like my wine, and that's where the calorie intake comes from.... if it's just a one off thing on holidays, I do not mind. We still need to enjoy our lives the most possible, don't we? Well done for making the choice to exercise along your weight loss xxx #FitnessTuesday

  7. Well done on your weight loss, that's great! What you have said is absolutely true and something my PTs say often - you cannot out-train a bad diet! I started off with improving my diet & attending classes 3x a week for 30/45mins at a time. I have now increased that to 8-10 classes a week, I find the more I do the better I feel so I just want to do more - it's like an addiction! Good luck with reaching your goal I look forward to following your progress x

If you had gone over to Florida and not eaten any fried chicken, I would have been very disappointed! You have had a great start to your health kick and I am totally with you - although what you eat is the most important factor, exercise certainly helps too for weight loss. Well done on your loss so far and fingers crossed you can reach target for your birthday! Thank you for linking up with #WeightLossWednesday xx

wow that's great! Sounds like you're doing really well! I know it's so hard to carve out time for exercise when you have kids... I'm actually struggling to get to my own yoga class (not the one that I'm teaching but the one I'm attending ;-)) quite often! Hope you're not giving up on your local yoga class though 🙂 xx #FinessTuesday

Hopefully I can get to your yoga class soon. My damn husband has been having to work late most nights in the past couple of months. Hopefully he can start getting home earlier on Mondays again. 🙂 xx

I don't know how I didn't gain weight. But I guess even though I was eating and drinking naughty things, it is very warm and I was very busy so I was not eating huge amounts of food. Hope you do as well when you're in Florida! x
