Getting Enough Sleep

Getting Enough SleepThe thing about having kids is, you feel tired. A. Lot. And you wind up in a vicious cycle. One or more of the kids wake you up at night so that you feel tired all day. You compensate during the day by drinking lots of tea/coffee and consuming too much sugar. Then you get a random and strange burst of energy at 9pm (when you can catch up with housework or, in my case, blogging) so you end up staying up til 1am. And then it starts all over again the next day. And it continues to the following day after day after day. An even when your children get a bit older and don’t wake you up very often, it is too late and you are stuck in this cycle of not getting enough sleep.

But since March, I have been trying to make some changes in my life. I have been trying to eat healthily (more vegetables and less sugar and caffeine). I’ve been going to the gym 2-3 times a week and walking more. But still my sleep has suffered. Then in August, mostly due to the school holidays, I reduced my blogging. And you know what? I started falling asleep at 10pm/11pm. After years of not being able to fall asleep before midnight, I have been going to sleep at 11pm most nights. Sometimes at 10pm.

So what does that mean? Should I give up working or blogging so that I can more easily fall asleep? No, I won’t be giving up blogging anytime soon. But I will be having time constraints on blogging and social media. I aim to turn off the laptop and ignore social media after 9pm. Hopefully that will give me enough time to unwind and continue getting enough sleep.

  1. Studies actually show that working on laptops, blogging or using social media before bedtime affects sleep. It’s not just that you are ‘revving’ your brain up…it’s also to do with the light that the electronic gadgets emit. Glad to hear you’re sleep has improved 🙂 X #ThePrompt

  2. You’re so right about this – both about the extra burst of energy at 9pm and the need to get off social media earlier. I promise myself an early night so often but rarely get it! Hope your plan works. x #theprompt

  3. Well, we limit electronics time for our kids don’t we? I have found that my eldest doesn’t sleep well at all if she’s been on her phone before bed and she has to now leave it outside her room. We don’t tend to exercise the same discipline and it’s annoyingly addictive – the temptation to check everything. It’s a good idea to have a break from it.

    1. Exactly. I am so tough when it comes to my kids watching television and going on the ipad, but then they go to bed and I get caught up in the excitement of ‘alone’ time and overdo it on the telly and social media.

  4. I have done the same! I now switch the PC off by about 8.30pm and I don’t take my iPad upstairs anymore. Just need to stop the social media faffing on my phone! But, already I am sleeping for longer, and better. Just need to stop waking multiple times and I might even feel rested 🙂 The ongoing battle for a decent nights sleep! Good luck x Thanks so much for sharing with #ThePrompt x

  5. Oh I can so empathise, but I’m a real night owl so the idea of getting off social media earlier is one that I embrace and I read all the reports, however it’s the time when I do have that burst of energy and act on it! I shoudn’t do as I’m often always tired – I should follow your lead and try and quit!
