Keeping Cool With Dyson Pure Cool

I’m from California, so you might think I enjoy the heat. But warm weather in the UK is not agreeable. Apart from some shops, most places do not have air conditioning. You are constantly feeling a bit too hot and too stuffy. But I like my home to be a cool and comfortable oasis. Normally we use some fans in the bedrooms and a big, clunky pedestal fan in the living room. But not this year. For the past three weeks, we have been keeping cool with our new Dyson Pure Cool Desk Fan.

There are so many positives about the pure cool fan. As you can see from the top photo, and the next one below, there are no blades. That means that my children can stick their heads and hands in and I don’t have to yell ask ‘stop trying to touch the blades’ every five minutes. It is completely safe. This means a lot when you have young children and you cannot keep an eye on them every second.

The pure cool fan is powerful. It can keep an entire room cool on one of the lower settings. But that doesn’t mean it is loud. In fact, we have been sleeping with it on, and it just acts as white noise. I get really hot at night (even during the winter I keep the window open, much to Husband’s dismay). But with the pure fan, we can keep the windows closed. This is especially good when it is hot and there is no air/wind blowing. Also, I suffer from hay fever, so keeping the windows closed keeps the pollen out.

Speaking of hay fever, the pure fan isn’t just a fan. It also acts as an air purifier. It removes 99.95% of the allergens and pollutants in the air. Dubz has asthma so I will often put the fan on in his room before bedtime to cool and clean his bedroom. A few weeks ago, when there was a crazy dust cloud in London, blown in from the Middle East, I was sneezing every time I went outdoors. So I spent most of that time in my house, with the doors and windows closed and with my pure fan on. It was a godsend.

If you’re think of getting the Dyson pure cool fan, I can’t recommend it enough. It is not cheap at £349.99, but it is well worth the price. We have been carrying ours from downstairs to upstairs as needed but plan to buy another one as it has more than proven itself. It also comes with a remote control, so you don’t have to get up to adjust the fan. And because it is Dyson, and they love good technology, you can monitor the air from the Dyson app on your smartphone. Who doesn’t want cool, clean, modern air??!…

Autumn to Winter in One Week

December in London can be a strange month. You can be getting ready for Christmas while the weather feels quite autumnal. And then in just a week’s time, winter has arrived. I thought I would share some photos which were taken in the space of one week. The top being the first photo, and the last two from a week later. We start off with green, orange and red leaves on the tree, and the leaves that are on the ground are crunchy. Then there seems to be more leaves on the ground, and they’re mostly brown. There is frost and ice, and everything still looks quite beautiful though different to how they once were.

The photos were all taken in Richmond Park, where I go once or twice a week for walks with friends. I always mean to remember to bring my SLR, but I forget. The photos were taken with my iPhone 6, which has such an amazing camera, and makes me look like a better photographer than I am.

Vue Cinema

Thrifty Thursday – Kids AM at Vue Cinemas

What a treat my daughter and I had this past Saturday. The Vue Cinema at Piccadilly Circus had a little Princess Do. They treated some bloggers from the newly formed MyFamilyClub Bloggers Network to a screening of ‘Barbie: The Pearl Princess’. There were yummy cake pops (um, we might have had three), popcorn, fruit shoots and each child got a good quality wand and tiara (I’ve had enough of cheap and tatty tiaras). There was also one lady doing face painting and another doing temporary tattoos and balloon animals.

Moozles, who is almost six years old, said we were so lucky. And afterwards, when I took her out for lunch, she said that the people in the restaurant must feel ashamed that they didn’t have on princess dresses or have their faces painted. I didn’t want to disagree with her.

I had never heard of the Vue Cinemas’ KIDS AM screenings before Saturday. I didn’t realise that Vue showed kids films on Saturday and Sunday mornings (and school holiday mornings) for only £1.75. What a bargain. Moozles loves going to the cinema. But we only take her every few months as it can be so expensive. We will definitely be going again. I see that the ‘Moshi Monster’ movie is out soon. She will love that. Hopefully Moozles isn’t disappointed in the lack of cake pops and face painting on offer.
On a side note, I have watched a few Barbie movies with Moozles, and normally they are a bit boring. ‘Barbie: The Pearl Princess’ was actually good and I may or may not have shed a few tears at the end. This event was free, but the opinions expressed are completely my own.
Rush hairdressers

New Hairdo at Rush Wimbledon Village

I have a love-hate relationship with hair salons. I love having someone else wash (and massage) my hair. I love a good cut and blow-dry. But I hate the worry of a bad or unflattering hair cut. I hate it when my fringe is not cut perfectly straight. So when I was invited to try out the brand-new Rush Hair & Beauty in Wimbledon Village, I felt a bit nervous. But I was also excited as I had been wanting a new hairdo for a few months.

First impressions were good. Wimbledon Village is quite a nice area, so I would never expect to see a shabby shop or a bargain hair salon there. Rush Wimbledon Village looks quite luxurious. And besides the normal tea and coffee, I was excited to see that they also offer Prosecco (shame I was driving). My hair stylist, Zoe, turned out to understand my hair (fine, but wavy and there’s A LOT of it). I showed her a couple of photos of hairstyles that I liked, and we talked about ways to make my hair look nice whether I straighten it or wear it naturally wavy.

Zoe gave my hair a special conditioning treatment, which has left my hair feeling shinier and much less frizzy. She then she cut off a few inches and gave my hair new shape. I am normally dissatisfied with my fringe trims as most hair stylists manage to cut it a bit wonky. But Zoe did a great job. After a blow-dry, she used a curling iron to give my hair some light waves. I bounced away feeling quite happy with my new hairdo. Now I just need to figure out how to recreate those waves at home.

If you live in/near Wimbledon, you should visit Rush Hair & Beauty. Wimbledon Village has some lovely shops and restaurants so you can make an afternoon of it. There is metered parking nearby (bring change), but parking is free on Sundays. Rush is currently offering 50% off for new clients, just book using the code RUSH50. New hairdos for everybody!…

children play centre

Soft Play Centres London

If you are a parent, chances are that you have been to a soft play centre at least once. And if your child is seven or eight years old, then it’s likely that you’ve been to the soft play at least 57 times. Moreover if you have more than one child. Most adults are not big fans of the noise and chatter of the soft play. Though it can be a godsend on a rainy day when your children are about to tear your house down brick by brick. But I think there are several important lessons that children can learn at the soft play. Practical lessons that will help them in the future.

Soft Play Centres London Tips

1. Survival of the Fittest – Despite its name, the soft play can get rough. Children push, shout, kick and spit. And that’s your own kids. Other people’s children are even worse. The soft play teaches kids how to deal with a kick to the ribs and still get to the slide first. That’s how future CEOs are made.

2. There’s Always A Bully – In the real world, not everyone will be kind and caring. There is always someone, be they big or small, who will act like a bastard. You might not be able to ignore this person but you don’t have to let this person get you down or keep you from having fun.

3. Building Relationships – In an unfamiliar land of play structures, strangers come together to form alliances. There the smaller ones become fast friends in order to protect themselves from that one mean kid. A smaller child will follow an older child around. Maybe they are of the same gender or age, but kids can find common ground easily if they want to make a new friend.

4. Run, Run, As Fast As You Can – Speed is good. Really good. Climb to the top, jump over the thingamajig, race to the slide. Caution is not always best. Sometimes you need to just go as fast as your little legs can carry you.

5. Having Fun Alone – Many children do not want to play by themselves. The soft play can be a way for some children to want to do things, without being attached to their mummy or daddy. Conversely, this can be good for parents who sometimes just want to sit quietly and have a cup of coffee.

So the next time it rains or the kids are going stir-crazy, just take them to the soft play. It’s not that bad. Plus you could even get a nice cup of tea out of it.

The tate modern

London Favourites: Tate Modern

For those of you who aren’t familiar with London or have only been once or twice, I thought I would start regularly posting about all my favourite London attractions. Places that you should visit, whether as a foreign tourist or someone who lives in the UK. We briefly considered moving out of London after we had our first child, but realised that there was no where else we would rather live. I’m sure you all love your towns/cities/villages, but me, I love London.

First stop –  Tate Modern, which is located on the Southbank. One of the great things about London museums is that many of them are free. Although you do have to pay for the special exhibitions, much of the museum is free for all to peruse. There is so much to see, that you would need to make several trips. And don’t assume that children won’t love a modern art gallery. My children had a fun time, and have asked to go back to the Tate again.

We went on Saturday, and our first stop was Liminal on level four. There are boxes, of different shapes and sizes, which children (and adults) are invited to try and use to make sculptures. Moozles and Dubz made a robot, and Dubz even donated his hat (for a minute) to make the robot a bit snazzier. Tate Modern have a few kids-oriented exhibits like this, allowing the children to participate in the art.

After looking at some art installations, we were feeling quite hungry so we popped into the Tate Cafe. We hadn’t eaten there in years, and were pleasantly surprised at how the food had improved. Husband and I had the three course Christmas menu (which cost £25 each). We raved about the meal for days, as all the courses were superb. My potted shrimp starter was my favourite course. Husband loved his duck main. And the kids’ favourite was pudding (what a shocker). Tate Modern give kids a free main meal, at lunchtime, with every adult meal. Such a lovely touch! We enjoyed the meal so much, we are planning to go again soon with family.…
