Oh, I do like to be beside the riverside. And if I can be sitting by the river, enjoying some delicious food, then even better. My new favourite riverside restaurant in Kingston-upon-Thames is Jackson & Rye. And I don’t just like the location. The food is pretty damn tasty too.
As an American expat, I am always keen to try a restaurant that claims to serve American fare. But normally I’m left with overpriced burgers or non-fluffy pancakes. You can’t imagine how a disappointing pancake can ruin my day. That is obviously a personality flaw. But rather than seek counselling, I’ve decided to just focus on finding better restaurants. Jackson & Rye definitely fits the bill.
I have been to Jackson & Rye for both brunch and dinner, but on this occasion we went for a family lunch. In fact, we went for a Father’s Day lunch. While the restaurant was busy, the manager makes sure that it isn’t overbooked. You don’t have tables squeezed into every space. You don’t have to listen to your neighbours’ conversation. Add this to the cool, New York-style decor and you instantly feel relaxed when you sit down. And while you enjoy the ambience, you can order one of their lovely cocktails while perusing the menu. If you don’t like cocktails, there’s a great lager called Dixie, and of course there’s always wine and Prosecco.
As an American, I was so pleased to discover that Jackson & Rye serve corn dogs. If you’re not familiar with them, they are frankfurters wrapped in corn batter and then deep fried. They may sound strange, but they are utter yumminess. And my children love corn dogs now so we order them at every visit.
Husband loves ordering from the BBQ options (he loves their ribs), while I like to try as many different things as possible. Even the salads sound amazing, but they will probably be the last items I try. I mean, I still haven’t had the buttermilk fried chicken. I had the shrimp burger this time, which was delicious. And the sweet potato fries are divine.
My children love the kids’ menu at Jackson & Rye. Moozles is nine and often doesn’t get enough food from the kids’ menu, but here she gets plenty of delicious food. My kids love the cheeseburger with bacon so much, I can’t imagine them wanting to try anything else. But as long as my two are enjoying their food and not taking food from my plate, I am one happy mama.
Dessert was ice cream sundaes and banana splits. Husband had the peanut butter fudge s’mores, which was different and familiar all at the same time. They were delectable. And everyone left with full tummies. Luckily, we were able to have a stroll along the Thames, and then walk around Kingston town centre to do some shopping. Thank you to Jackson & Rye Kingston for a wonderful meal.
We were invited to visit Jackson & Rye for the purpose of this review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
